Painting Demo using the Zorn Palette

This is a one hour demo I conducted for a Private Student using only the Zorn Palette.

Anders Zorn was a Swedish painter who lived at the same time as the Impressionists and painted portraiture. I put him in the same class as John Singer Sargent. (one of my all time favorite painters)

The Zorn palette is using 4 colors (Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cad Red and Yellow Ochre) and mixing those 4 to get other colors - greens, purples, oranges, brown, etc.

Here is the photo we worked from. This lovely young lady just walked into my studio the other day and I asked her if I could take her photo.

The first step is to get my line drawing:

Then we added the light value (skin tone) everywhere the darks weren't. Just 2 values now.

The we started adding color

And the finished One hour Demo

Painting Demo at the Beginner Oil Painting Workshop - Filoli Mansion

Here are the steps I take to create a still life painting. Sorry that some of the photos are a bit blurry.

First I do a line drawing and get a feel of how I want the composition to look on the canvas.

Now I'm adding some color to the canvas. I'm not afraid to paint a little darker because lighter leaves and layers of color will be painted over top. At this point, I'm just trying to get a feel for the painting and get paint on the canvas to move around and sculpt.

I've decide the rose is the most important part of the still life, so it will be painted as the star of the show!

Getting there but still a work in progress!

The Apple Study

Bought some apples at the market and set them up in my studio . My private art student, Rohini and I painted them today.

After creating a line drawing with transparent red oxide,we painted in the shapes and created the value patterns in the apples.

Then......we put in the background, foreground colors and fine tuned the apples.

The New Still lIfe

I saw these beautiful yellow roses at the store and decided to build a still life around them. I thought the lemons would be fun and having some purple flowers created a complimentary color scheme. It's not finished yet. Tomorrow I will finish the lemons and add some detail to some of the leaves in the bouquet.

Here's how it all began:

After sketching in the composition with Transparent Red Oxide, I brushed in all the color to create a color map:

Not very pretty at all.

Then came the lighter values:

and next ........some detail to the lemons and a few areas in the bouquet and ready to post to Daily Paintworks  :)
