The Last Day - January Challenge - The Line up

Not quite finished yet .......I'll work on the plate tomorrow and also make a couple of the tulips important and the rest will recess into the background. It's a challenge to paint bright red tulips and make them intense ...tomorrow I'll also surround the red flowers with some grayed greens to make them pop more.

Here is the quick sketch with large shapes painted in:

and here is some definition in the apples and flowers:

Tomorrow, we finish! :)

Thank you for visiting my blog. Happy February Everyone!

Day 24 - January Challenge

WOW...where did the time go...I can't believe it's already the 24th. Have a tiny case of the flu but I guess no excuses, right?

I found a photo from www.Morguefile.com and had a blast trying to capture the attitude in this girl.

I think if I could, I would lighten the background a bit....BUT it is now framed and hanging in the SWA Spring Show.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

January Challenge - Day 18 - Watching and Waiting

This is an oil painting that started out as an acrylic painting. I began painting it right before the holidays.  Today, I took it to my studio and decided to paint over it with oils. I wanted to keep it very painterly and brushy.

Thank you for visiting my website :)

Here is the still life set up as it is sitting in my studio.

Sorry the photo is so dark.

I laid down the darks today and tomorrow I will get the beautiful daisies painted as well as all the light values in the composition. Hopefully the painting will come to life :)

Day 11 - January - 30 Day painting Challenge

I started a painting today with my student taking private lessons from me.

She told me she wanted to learn to paint portraits in 2015!

Here's the process we went through today.

Here is the line drawing and a picture of the model...my dear friend Alex.

After the drawing was completed I painted in the darks.

The lighter value and skin tone were added with a hint of rosy cheeks. The darker value of the cheeks and face will be added in the next class making sure we paint the planes and build volume. The eye painted is in shadow and we'll let it rest for right now.

and here is my student, Rohini, painting along and doing a great job!

Thank you...it's a pleasure painting with you on Sundays! :)

Update - Added a little more color 1/16/2015 and will finish the painting on Sunday, January 18th :)

Day 4 - 30 Day January Challenge

Started a still life today but didn't get it finished.

Here is the painting. I still have plenty to do to the flowers and will make sure I don't paint the life out of them. Want to add more leaves and color to the background and one of the flowers will have more definition.

Didn't get the painting done yet, but I thought I would show how I paint a portrait.

Here is the line drawing:

I took Transparent Red Oxide and painted in the feel of the model and also painted in the shadow areas.

Next I fine tuned the face :

Next, it's time for the light value, which is Permanent Rose, Yellow Ochre and white.

Lastly, adding more color to her face and bringing her to life.

Tomorrow, we'll get the painting done. :) Lots more color, paint and brush strokes!!!
